Things I have learned about being a dad

In October 2014 I became a father for the first time. Here are some things I’ve learned from my little buddy Judah.

1. I loved him before he was born, knew me or recognised me

2. I can’t ever imagine that there is anything he would ever do that would stop me loving him

3. I love him even though he is incapable of doing anything for me or giving me anything. I love him just because.

4. I sometimes look at him and think “wow I helped create you”

5. I feel proud when people recognise my image in him

6. I enjoy spending time with him

7. We like to play together

8. Our favourite game is hide and seek. This is when I temporarily hide my presence, knowing that there is great fun in him chasing and then finding me

9. I prefer him to be happy and healthy than in pain and upset

10. The sound of laughter is a good sound

11. Cuddles are good

12. I never withold anything that he needs that I have the power to give him

13. My provision doesn’t just meet essential needs….I want him to have my best

14. Sometimes what he thinks is fun is dangerous….but my discipline is never a lack of love but a sign of it

15. When he is in trouble or pain I come running

16. I am at my happiest when he recognises and responds to my presence

17. Sometimes I leave the room and he thinks that just because he can’t see me, I have abandoned him. This is not true

18. I want him to have an incredible future

“This then is how you should pray, “Our Father” – Jesus Christ

“Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, Abba, Father.” (Gal 4v6)

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3v1)
